Guest blog: SURTEX Preview

Surtex 2011
Gift & Home Today invited Penny Sikalis, the vice president of show producer GLM and manager of the SURTEX show, to share insights into the trends and resources at SURTEX. Here is her report.

Penny Sikalis
If it's spring, then it's time to attend SURTEX®, on May 20-22, 2012 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. Why? Because it’s the market that influences product trends across all home categories! Think of it as the crystal ball of emerging trends, and the indicator of product colors and designs that will soon be making their way into shops and then homes.

In its 26th year, SURTEX features more than 300 exhibitors representing the works of more than 1,000 artist and designers from around the world … all of whom are on the cutting-edge of the design business. They’ll be offering the latest original artwork and brands to the 6,000 attendees (art buyers and licensees) who annually seek surface designs, from textile and graphic design to illustration, photography and mixed media.

These designs will take shape in a broad spectrum of markets, including decorative fabrics, tabletop, giftware, stationery, greeting cards, gift wrap and other paper products, ceramics, linens and domestics, wall coverings and floor coverings, apparel textiles, toys, packaging and publishing. It’s an all-inclusive marketplace for not only product developers, but also smart independent retailers who want to stay ahead of their competition. They’ll get a sneak peek of what will be in development and launched for 2013 delivery.

Here, two SURTEX exhibitors share a bit about their upcoming offerings.

Sam Abell is President and CEO of Courtney Davis Inc.,  a leading art licensing agency for more than 37 years. His unique perspective for what’s ahead includes four themes:
  1. Color: fresh, bright and being used in a dominant fashion as well as accent
  2. Mix & Match: patterns are being juxtaposed in a unique, playful manner
  3. Burlap: a key accent in higher-end design
  4. Organic: a growing area of interest in both design and subject matter

Nancy Fire is founder and creative director of Design Works International, a well-known design studio and trend service firm of more than 20 years.

Surtex 2011
"This year we are focusing on eclectic mixes of patterns, like large scale floral designs paired with geometric accents. In addition, there are lush tropical patterns in deep color combinations, sun-struck mid-tone colors for retro florals, and coconut grove brights for junior conversationals. Nature remains strong, including birds with pattern-fill images in many styles."

In addition to seeing exhibitors’ offerings, SURTEX participants will have access to an all-new Trend Theater, where world-renowned forecasting companies will share their future visions via daily multi-media trend presentations. Complimentary and exclusive to SURTEX, these 30-minute sessions will inspire viewers with the pulse of the market, from consumer attitudes and street happenings, to color, design and theme directions across multiple categories.

To get the full picture of what’s ahead, and what every design-related business – whether manufacturer or retailer – should be planning for 2013/14, SURTEX is a must-attend. A comprehensive Conference Program as well as networking activities, will round out the experience. For registration and attendance details, visit www.surtex.com.

Organic bedding in new colorways for spring

Coyuchi sells organic cotton bedding in the United States. It says all of its cotton products are certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and produced using fair–labor practices, verified by in-country auditors.

"Anything wrinkle-free has added polyester or is coated with chemical resin," says Karyn Barsa, CEO of Coyuchi. “Also, skip super high thread counts: The thin threads may be strengthened with—you guessed it—more chemicals. Organic cotton, by contrast, simply softens over time, and generally lasts longer.”

New designs for tablecloths, napkins, guest towels

Hen House Linens has new tablecloths, napkins, guest towels, and other household essentials. It suggests mixing and matching the new patterns in the Spring 2012 collection, or coordinating them with a other patterns in the line.

Spring 2012 offerings include:

Bargello Navy. A retro take on Hen House Linen’s classic Bargello Grass print, this spring pattern features bold royal blue in a rolling geometric pattern. Equally eye-catching as a cocktail napkin or on a pillow, Bargello Navy works well with another spring selection, Fern Orange.

Spot On Lime. This lime shade offers a sophisticated approach to playful polka dots, and will definitely liven up a dining room as a tablecloth or placemat. Pair it with Spot On Raspberry, part of Hen House Linens’ original collection, to jazz up a springtime table setting.

Fern Orange. An intricate arabesque pattern, the burnt orange hue of this delicate design provides just the right amount of an exotic touch

Bold Stripe Navy. A striking combination of blues, orange and lime, this versatile pattern is the perfect backdrop as a tablecloth for rainy day dinner parties or for a sunny Saturday picnic.

New licensed textiles from Winterthur collection

Andover Fabrics has been a licensee of Winterthur since 2008. Andover Fabrics began in 1920 as a small office in downtown Manhattan that sold velvet cloth to the women’s hat trade. Today, the company is run by the grandson of the founder and continues to sell fabric but as an independent company devoted to the quilt trade.

Inspired by designs found in the vast textile collection at Winterthur, Andover’s Winterthur Collection offers quilters the opportunity to work creatively with beautiful patterns that reflect the quality and authenticity of the museum’s collection. The new collection of quilting fabrics is based on the late 18th-century John Hewson coverlet in Winterthur's textile collection. It consists of nine patterns in multiple colorways.

Tristan

Wildcat Territory showed new top-of-bed designs at this month's High Point furniture market. The "vast majority" of its products are made in the USA, the company says.

According to a company press release: “We are seeing a growing interest and awareness among consumers now in where the products they buy are made,” says Nancy Reib, Wildcat Territory president. “For companies like ours, this is a very positive trend. Wildcat Territory has been committed to manufacturing in America since launching our company some 15 years ago, and it’s one of the core values that I believe has set us apart in the marketplace.”

While Reib admits that it’s nearly impossible to create textiles from start to finish with 100 percent American-made materials today, she makes a point of working with domestic mills to develop exclusive fabrics and color-ways whenever possible. This Market, Tristan, a fabric woven in a pattern developed by Wildcat Territory in a pale silvery gray and cream, is a prime example of this approach.

Wildcat Territory also showed 40 new, high-quality rug designs that coordinate with its bedding collection, produced in partnership with Delos.

Bedding, pillows from the High Point Furniture Market

Eastern Accents shows its Spring 2011 introductions at the High Point furniture market, beginning this weekend. The company has partnered with Barclay Butera to create a new collection of bedding and pillows. Barclay Butera Bedding was designed to create the icing on the cake for the already successful Barclay Butera Lifestyle home furnishings line.

Inspired by trips to Europe, the company’s designers created three additions to the Eastern Accents line: Gallagher features a beautiful earth-tone crewel, Ceylon a blue and white ikat and Daphne the latest of French and Belgian mode.
Playing off the travel theme, Eastern Accents has introduced several pillows in its Studio 773 line. Bon Voyage and Destination are two new collections featuring beautiful map fabrics and block-printed burlap. Jet Setter is a pillow in the shape of a suitcase.
The six new Niche Bedding & Living collections and a pillow program are inspired by fashion trends; the designers paired yellow and gray earth tones and metallic to create transitional bedding.
De Medici Fine Linens will display its new jacquard called Lunetta. Available in the subtle pearl, biscotti, and truffle tones, this introduction is a 560 thread count, 100% Egyptian cotton sateen. Pairing perfectly with Lunetta is the Deluca collection, which includes three new solid sateen colors.

Eastern Accents has supplemented the richly elegant Marquise line with more decorative pillows. Embroidered silk, burnt-out velvet, and faux leather pillows are the perfect finishing touches to any Marquise bed. They have also expanded the faux leopard textiles collection Congo to include upholstered ottomans and table runners.

The classic statements "Sugar and Spice," "Kiss the Cook," "Bon Appetit," "What's Cookin'?" and "Never Trust a Skinny Cook," enhance the look of all aprons and kitchen towels found in each style.

All of the designs are offered in four coordinating pieces: standard apron, half apron, kitchen towel, and pot holder.
