Stylish kitchen gadgets for chopping, slicing

Zyliss will show a variety of kitchen gadgets at the 2012 International Housewares Show next month. The Fast Cut Herb Tool has five high-grade stainless steel cutting wheels that glide through herbs easily. A 90-degree blade rotation mechanism allows the home chef to select a preferred hold position: comfortably grip the soft touch handle or place the palm of the hand on the ergonomically-designed top.


The Egg Cutter has cutting wires to ensure consistent and even slicing. A food-grade and dishwasher-safe plastic housing makes this sturdy tool ready to use after hand- or dishwashing.

The bulky box grater has been redesigned to fold down into a compact stack to fit inside a drawer. When in use, it locks into a pyramid-like shape featuring three sides, each offering a specific grating utility, from fine to coarse or two-way grating all with acid-etched technology ensuring a premium clean grate from chocolate to citrus to cheese.

Swedish garlic press is easy to clean

Linden Sweden Inc. introduces the Click & Clean Garlic Press X by Jonas of Sweden. The Teflon-coated Click & Clean is available in cast aluminum which is said to mince garlic more efficiently. The garlic press fits comfortably in the hand. It is easy to use and easy to clean. The gadget will be available in October.

Colorful toaster matches any kitchen decor

Dualit noticed its toaster at the Prime Minister's residence at 10 Downing Street while First Lady Michelle Obama had tea with Mrs. Cameron.

The NewGen toaster from Dualit has a defrost setting for frozen bread and the option to toast buns and bagels. The selector control allows the user to heat either one or both slots. Designed for commercial use, the toaster is hand assembled in England and built to last, with an insulated stainless-steel body, variable controls and automatic turnoff. It is available in several colors, including those shown below.

For Father's Day, give an electric grill


Hammacher Schlemmer calls its new grill "The Best Electric Grill." In tests, the grill reached an average temperature of 617.2 degrees F, 259.6 degrees higher than a competing model. The grill’s stainless steel grates have integrated electric heating elements that produce powerful, direct heat. Coils below the grates generate even, radiant heat to ensure thorough cooking.

The Best model has 216 square inches of cooking surface that holds up to six 8-ounce filet mignons. It scored the highest for features because it was the only unit with a hot dog roller that rotates automatically, it has a removable searing plate that accommodates vegetables or eggs, and it has two 13-inch by 11¾-inch prep shelves.

At the Housewares Show in Chicago in March, Espressione introduced a range of coffee appliances. Among them are:
  • The Rapid Touch Coffee Grinder with stainless steel blades and chromated push button control
  • The Squissita Plus 18 bar pressure espresso machine with unique electroplate chrome finish, and the
  • “Concerto” capsule espresso machine with a cool-to-the-touch plastic housing, built-in thermostat and automatic shut-off system.
The espresso machine uses Meseta biodegradable capsules, which are available in four blends.

Cook set for fruits and vegetables


The Apple Cooker set from Mastrad is said to be a better way to cook fruits and vegetables. Fruits cook in the microwave or a conventional oven.

The set includes two non-stick, BPA-free silicone apple cookers, one corer with scoop and a recipe book. The scoop has a slight tip, which helps pierce the fruit flesh and enables swift removal of the core and seeds in one clean motion. The scoop is also marked for one teaspoon and one tablespoon measures to make food prep easier. Sets are available in candy apple red, apple green and black.

Tagine in new colors holds 4 quarts

The Emile Henry large tagine is now available in fig and olive colors. Introduced at the Housewares show in Chicago this month, the large tagine is 12.5 inches in diameter and holds nearly 4 quarts of food (enough to serve six people).

It is made from an innovative ceramic technology that allows the vessel to be used directly on a heat source or stovetop (for browning meats and vegetables) and then can be placed in the oven for a gentle, flavor-producing simmer. The traditional tagine lid allows the steam to rise, condense on the walls and then moisten the food below.

The Arti kitchen scale from Escali is meant to be kept out on the countertop, not hidden in a drawer. It is available in nine colors,, including Retro Red, Poppin’ Pink and Deep Purple. It can weigh liquids and solids up to 15 pounds or 7,000 grams. The anti-bacteria, integrated glass platform operates with just a touch of a finger. It measures 6.5 inches by 9 inches.

The Velo is a luggage scale (below) that weighs up to 110 pounds. It is available in Black, White, Plum, Warm Red or Royal Blue. The scale is powered by a removable Lithium battery (included). The 12-inch nylon strap has a stainless steel clasp.

Touchless paper towel dispenser

The CLEANCut touchless paper towel dispenser from Clean Cut International has LED technology and a self-sharpening blade. Users can seamlessly dispense and cut any length and brand of paper towel, while saving resources and avoiding cross-contamination in the kitchen, laundry room and elsewhere around the house.

The product is available in black, white or stainless steel finish. Designed for under -counter mounting, installation instructions are included. See it at the 2011 Housewares show.

Kitchen gadget: the Baggy Rack



Jokari's Baggy Rack holds open sandwich bags so they can be filled easily. The rack is adjustable to hold various sizes of sandwich storage bags. To use, slide the bag under the clips located on the arms of the Baggy Rack to hold open and start filling. The company says it is like having an extra set of hands.

Karim Rashid cutting tools for kitchen, home office

The aptly named Slice offers a wide range of tools for peeling vegetables, opening mail (above) and cutting paper. All but the letter opener are designed by Karim Rashid (see below). The items use ceramics for cutting, which stays sharper than high-carbon steel, the company says.

Kitchen gadgets from Farberware

Lifetime Brands introduced Farberware kitchen products at the Housewares show this week. The Bagel Pod (above) is a safe way to slice bagels, muffins, buns and roll. The non-skid base has a built-in crumb catcher. The bag funnel (top) comes in two sizes to fit quart- and gallon-size bags. The funnel folds flat for easy storage.

Kitchen gadget stirs sauces

Hammacher Schlemmer's Autonomous Saucier automatically stirs sauces. The device stands on three stainless steel legs and spins and revolves smoothly around a pan, mixing sauce ingredients. A spatula on one of the legs rests flush against the bottom of the pan and lifts bits of food that would otherwise stick and burn.

Clever felt breadbasket

The Avva Felt Breadbasket from Teroforma is made of 100% wool felt. The colors coordinate with the company’s linen collections. It is available in white, green, brown and gray. The baskets hold four bagels or equivalent size breads.
